Sub Thoughts - Dragon Ball: Episode 18: The Turtle Hermit's Intense Training

Episode Data
Original Japanese Airdate:
June 25, 1986
Major Cast: Son Goku (Masako Nozawa), Kuririn (Mayumi Tanaka), Kame-sennin (Kohei Miyauchi), Lunch (Mami Koyama), Narrator (Joji Yanami)
Synopsis: With their early morning training over, Goku and Kuririn continue on to their morning training. In order to strengthen their arms and legs, they train by plowing a field barehanded! After breakfast it’s study time!! After lunch, they take an afternoon nap until 1:30. During the afternoon they help out with construction work. It’s training where they sweat, toughen their muscles, and even receive a part-time job salary! Furthermore, they carry themselves through rough training to toughen their reflexes, swimming ten laps around a lake while being chased by sharks and dodging the frenzied attacks of bees, to finally end a full day of training!

I'm falling more in love with Tanaka's weird little noises with every episode. She makes Kuririn sound so freaking adorable!

Oh wow, I'm surprised by how accurately the book Goku has to read was kept in the dub. I fully expected it to be something worse in the original version.

I liked the montage of warriors sleeping better in the dub, with Roshi's dialogue about how even the strongest of warriors must sleep. Sure, the narrator says as much shortly later, but coming from Roshi it's another lesson for them, from the narrator it's just another joke.

The first flashback to Kuririn's time with the Oorinji temple, is this filler? Not just this scene, but the mention of where he comes from at all? I like the mention of it just to help flesh out his bakground a tiny bit.

'However, for whatever reason, that lake has sharks in it! Be careful!' Ah, the logic of the DB world. I can't help but think they imitated the Jaws theme here too LOL.

As good as these training episodes are, they don't give me a lot to comment on change-wise. Maybe the next episode will be different.
